Overlooked Impact of Volunteers: Tails Humane Society

Overlooked Impact of Volunteers: Tails Humane Society

Concentrating on the overlooked aspects of volunteering, I photographed at Tails Humane Society in DeKalb, Illinois. My work documents the ongoings at the shelter from the perspective of a volunteer. These photographs attempt to record the human actions which fuel the shelter and the animals whose lives these people touch.

An amazing amount of towels are used every day at Tails. Reusing towels between kennels can run the risk of spreading disease, so volunteers must be careful to make the proper cleaning solutions and not mix towels.

Volunteers must perform their tasks while dealing with the distractions the humane society provides. Often times animals will cry, bark, or beg for attention. While a volunteer may wish to comfort an animal, they may not always have the time, if they want to perform their assigned tasks.

Spilled food is an every day sight at the humane society.

A volunteer preforms the important task of lining the puppy pen floors with news papers.

The volunteers are given a space to store their name tags. Volunteers will pick up their name takes when they sign in, and drop them off as they sign out.

A mother and her young son come to Tails to view the dogs.

Mollie, an adoptable dog, sits calmly in her kennel.

A volunteer in a cat room helps with socialization of the animals.

Doing laundry is a helpful aspect of volunteering, which people may not normally think about. Tails has an extra large washer and dryer to help keep up with all the laundry.
